Logging in to DPA with eIDAS
Are you a citizen of another EU country? Then you can log in to DPA with the electronic identification means of your own country, through eIDAS. To do this, your European electronic identity must be linked to your Belgian identity.
1. What do you need to arrange first?
To log in to DPA with eIDAS:
- your country must be connected to eIDAS for authentication with Belgian public services;
- you must use an electronic identification means that your country supports for eIDAS;
- you must be known in Belgium by a Belgian national register number or BIS number.
No BIS number yet? Since April 2024, a user without a Belgian identification number can be guided, during the eIDAS process, to a procedure to be entered in the BIS register. The federal government can ask for more information to establish your identity.
2. Which data must DPA know?
DPA must be able to identify you by your Belgian national register number or BIS number.
The number registered with DPA must match the Belgian identity to which your European eIDAS identity is linked.
DPA does not need to register your foreign electronic identification means. After a successful eIDAS authentication, DPA receives your Belgian identification number through the Federal Authentication Services.
3. What do you do the first time?
When you log in with eIDAS for the first time:
- At DPA, choose to log in with eID. On the next screen, choose log in with eIDAS.
- Select the country whose electronic identification means you use.
- Log in with the identification means of that country.
- The Belgian government tries to link your European electronic identity to your Belgian identity, based on your national register number or BIS number.
- If the link can be made automatically, your identity is confirmed and you can continue to DPA.
- If the link cannot be made automatically, an additional identification procedure with the Belgian government may be necessary.
So the link between the foreign eIDAS identity and the Belgian identification number is made by the federal government, not by DPA.

4. What happens the next times you log in?
After the first successful link, you do not need to repeat this procedure each time you log in.
You choose log in with eIDAS again, select your country and authenticate with your usual electronic identification means.
The existing link connects your European identity to your Belgian identity again. DPA then receives your Belgian identification number and uses it to recognise you as a lawyer.
Tip: if logging in with eIDAS fails, first check that you have a BIS or national register number, and that this same number is correctly registered with DPA.
